Influences
Max Dupain was influenced with Man Ray’s photographs, especially his abstract works and the way Ray deals with lighting like this photograph. Dupain was also influenced with Paul Cezanne (French painter) where his painting was equivalent to Man Ray’s photographs. Ostensibly, Dupain was influenced with both these artist as they have worked with nudes like him.

My Photographs
Written Statement
I have based my photographs with architectural buildings that have unique shape and can be transformed into something geometrically abstract. I have explored around the city and identified a few interesting looking buildings. The first photograph was taken at Melbourne Central where I wanted to focus on geometrical shapes as well as expressing the abstract qualities, emphasizing the simple shape and design of the structure. I wanted to portray the repetitive circles and vertical lines that are reflected on the long building. The second image was taken at Dockland, and I took this image because I was attracted to the pattern of the outer detail. The third photograph was also taken at dockland and I wanted to present the different geometrical shapes made in this building but I wanted to focus on how photographs can also present the beauty of the buildings rather than humans creating the building. The reason why I have used black and white photography is because Dupain expresses simplicity and directness through black and white because he felt that colour was restricting its objectivity and nothing was left for individual interpretation. Max Dupain quoted: 'all my working life I have tried to keep the exercise of photography to myself and show the inner meanings of chosen subjects in an abstract way by giving my personal interpretation' Max Dupain, 1991
